Boeheim responds to Flynn declaring for draft
If there was still any uncertainty regarding Jonny Flynn’s future, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim put the issue to rest for good Thursday afternoon.
‘Jonny Flynn has signed with an agent and will enter the NBA Draft,’ Boeheim said in a statement. ‘He had a tremendous two years at Syracuse. Jonny helped to elevate our program as much as any player we have ever had. We wish him the best of luck as he pursues a career in professional basketball. I expect Jonny will be an outstanding pro player.’
By signing with an agent, Flynn forgoes the final two years of his NCAA eligibility. Neither Boeheim nor Flynn were available for further comment.
Conflicting media reports have swirled for about a week, ever since SU Athletics released a statement on April 9 saying Flynn, shooting guard Eric Devendorf and small forward Paul Harris would all declare for the NBA Draft. The release said Flynn would not sign with an agent, giving him an opportunity to return to Syracuse for his junior season.
Boeheim’s statement Thursday ends any speculation and ensures Flynn will not return to SU. Both nbadraft.net and draftexpress.com, two popular draft Web sites, project Flynn going to the Phoenix Suns No. 14 overall – the final pick of the lottery.
Flynn finishes his collegiate career with 1,211 points, 38th on the Syracuse all-time list. He also ranks seventh in program history in assists with 439 and broke the record for minutes in a season this year with 1,418.
