Letter to the Editor : Valkyrie Club officials respond to criticism of ad in The Daily Orange

To Rebecca Moody:

It is not the Valkyrie Club’s goal to offend anyone. Do not be ‘disappointed’ with The Daily Orange. It is advertising supported and is completely independent of the university student publications. In this economy, no one can reject paid communication.

We believe you are idealistic and in denial about the very world you live in. The reality is the ’60s are gone, and women do not need to prove themselves quite so much anymore as the ball is already rolling in favor of women. There are more educated females in this generation than males at this point. More women are executives, political leaders and athletes than ever before. Women can be both the boss and attractive, and do not have to make any sacrifices to either condition. What you have yet to learn:

Has there ever been a human being who didn’t want to be attractive to another human being, male or female, ever? A man who is not attracted to a half-naked woman – or man, there is no difference – crawling toward him? It’s attractive and no one really even knows why. Whatever the case, who are you to tell us what we should be attracted to?

Who is being exploited? Isn’t exploitation designed to take advantage of another’s ‘weaknesses’? This is a weakness men are not ashamed of and in fact publicly celebrate. In our opinion, if you ask any woman, and they answer honestly, they will admit that they appreciate the attention, especially if it’s from someone they are attracted to. If evolution had not determined this aspect of our nature, you may not be here to make such a stink over a woman you don’t even know, in a paid advertisement. Off this logic, why are you not condemning Victoria’s Secret or protesting in front of movie theaters? Why are you not protesting Abercrombie and Fitch for plastering their walls with children in sexually suggestive poses?

This topic is sophomoric and clich, at best. There are so many other things to be angry and passionate about.

Being attractive to men is not violence against women. Being attracted to women is not violence against women.

If you do not agree, we’d be welcome to discussing. We would be more than happy to address this topic with you at talktosuzi@thevalkyrieclub.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
