We, a group of Syracuse University alumni and former Daily Orange staffers, are writing to express our support for the recent journalistic efforts of Kathleen Ronayne and Beckie Strum.
Their series, ‘Fait Accompli,’ has sparked a flood of commentary, including a letter from more than 70 faculty and staff members that called the articles an example of irresponsible journalism. We don’t agree.
Their stories were the results of six months of reporting and gave voices to both critics and supporters. In turn, ‘Fait Accompli’ has sparked considerable discussion about important campus issues. These are the kinds of stories that an independent student newspaper can and should report. They should be encouraged and celebrated, not dismissed.
