Electropop band Miike Snow to headline first Bandersnatch show of the semester
Miike Snow, an electropop band, will kick off the first of two concerts for the 2010 Bandersnatch Music Series. Special guest Delorean will accompany the group at the Schine Underground on March 30. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and music will start at 8:00 p.m.
The Bandersnatch Music Series is a subdivision of University Union Concerts, which features smaller shows in Schine Underground for up-and-coming artists.
Harry Roberts, the co-director of the Bandersnatch Music Series and a sophomore in the Bandier Program for Music and Entertainment Industries, said the music series typically looks for artists who would fit for Juice Jam or Block Party but have huge potential to gain mainstream attention.
Miike Snow fits the criteria because the band’s self-titled album was listed in SPIN Magazine’s Top 40 Albums of 2009 and was chosen by iTunes as part of its Next Big Thing program. The program includes 40 new artists predicted to have the most influence in years to come.
‘I’m ecstatic,’ Roberts said. ‘I wanted to go to a Miike Snow show just as a fan, so having the opportunity to bring them here is awesome.’
Roberts described the band as having a pop, mainstream sound. He believes that there is a demand for this type of music on campus.
‘They have such a cool sound that people will gravitate to,’ Roberts said. ‘Miike Snow is one of those bands that people will hear for the first time and be hooked on.’
The band plans to perform in three sold-out shows in New York City prior to performing in Syracuse, and it will continue past Syracuse to stops at several festivals including SXSW, Coachella and Bonnaroo.
Miike Snow’s production team, best known as Bloodshy and Avant, has produced for Britney Spears, Madonna and Kylie Minogue. The team won a Grammy for best dance record for its work on Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ in 2005.
Kelly D’Angelo, a sophomore television, radio and film major and an art history major, said she will definitely go for a good time because she likes techno and pop music.
D’Angelo said she enjoys going to shows in the Schine Underground because the venue is nice and a little cramped, reminding her of favorite concert venues from home.
To promote the concert, the Bandersnatch Music Series is playing Miike Snow’s music in Schine and spreading the word virally on Facebook. Roberts believes that if the right people hear the music, they will appreciate and enjoy the band’s ‘poppy, mainstream sound.’
Delorean, a synthpop band, will be touring with Miike Snow. Synthpop is a genre of music that utilizes a synthesizer. Owl City’s recent No. 1 Billboard song, ‘Fireflies,’ also puts to work a synthesizer, and No Doubt, a popular band in the late 1990s and early 2000s was also a synthpop band.
‘(Delorean) has a really cool sound,’ Roberts said. ‘They do a lot of remixes. I’m looking forward to learning about them.’
