Klamm looks to expand social media with change in position

Dan Klamm will make a quick office move Monday.

For three years, Klamm, a 2008 alumnus, has been the marketing and communications coordinator of Career Services at Syracuse University. He will take over as assistant director of digital and social media of the Division of Advancement and External Affairs. His office is moving from the Schine Student Center to the Women’s Building.

Working under recent hire Kate Brodock, executive director of digital and social media, Klamm will manage and coordinate SU’s student social media team. The team — in its first year — consists of 12 students who are responsible for running the university’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Brodock said Klamm will also help the team with additional projects on campus in an effort to get SU involved with more digital and social platforms. He will also be using sites beyond Facebook and Twitter.

Klamm said he will take on the challenge to expand SU’s social media presence both locally and nationally by taking advantage of more innovative location-based services, such as Foursquare and SCVNGR, as well as social networking platforms like Google Plus.

‘We’ll be working on things to help the university achieve its big picture using social media, whether that’s attracting prospective students to SU or strengthening relationships with alumni through social media,’ Klamm said. ‘I’ll be working closely with Student Affairs to get students engaged and aware of everything SU has to offer here.’

During Klamm’s three years with Career Services, he worked with his colleagues to develop a social media program to increase awareness of special events, programs and initiatives offered by the department.

‘When he joined us, social media was just getting off the ground, and he’s done a great job integrating social media and the work that we do, which has been a significant improvement in positioning us to use that pretty effectively,’ said Mike Cahill, director of Career Services. ‘We have big shoes to fill here.’

Career Services has not started the hiring process for a new marketing and communications coordinator, but the position will be filled with some minor changes to its responsibilities, Cahill said.

‘We certainly want to continue the work that Dan has done. He has made the position a very valuable one for the office, and I can’t imagine us not having someone in that position,’ Cahill said.

Klamm said that in the interim, a team has been set up to take over his former social media duties for Career Services.

‘I’ve had a great experience here at Career Services for the last few years. I enjoy the work I do. It’s meaningful and rewarding to be able to work with students and SU alumni,’ Klamm said. ‘This is a chance to build upon the work that I’ve done here and work on larger-scale social media projects throughout the university. I’m very excited about it.’
