Bob Heisler was a class act. Under his helm, The Daily Orange maintained the highest standards for thoroughness and factual accuracy. Yet, the paper was never boring.
The period of his leadership was concurrent with the anti-war movement, the rise of racial and feminist issues and the last years of the draft. The paper managed to do justice to all these issues while also offering lively cultural stories.
For those of us in student government, we occasionally disagreed with coverage – especially when we were not presented as the perfect, all-knowing beings we knew ourselves to be. However, at the end of the day, we knew The D.O. was doing its job.
Heisler and Bob Tembeckjian established the foundation for superior, independent student journalism at The D.O.
It is ironic his death resulted in this long story of his life for Heisler never wanted to be the story. A good man has died.
