Remembrance Scholar: Thomas Wichman

Timothy Cardwell was a junior when he died in the attack of Pan Am Flight 103.

He was captain of his soccer team, a member of ROTC and active in wrestling, chorus and theater.

For Remembrance Week, senior Thomas Wichman represents Cardwell, to remind students at Syracuse University of the talent and energy that was stolen from him 20 years ago.

‘I knew right away that I wanted to represent him,’ said Wichman, a television, radio, film and finance major.

Wichman, like Cardwell, is active in the ROTC. In fact, that’s how Wichman found out about Cardwell.

He would walk past the remembrance poster in the ROTC center every day his freshman year, and ever since, he knew we wanted to represent Cardwell.

‘We both did soccer and are interested in drama,’ he said. ‘It’s the small things like that, they connect us.’

Wichman has spent the week celebrating Cardwell for the lives he touched, speaking out for all of the victims of Pan Am.

‘Twenty years after a tragedy, people might be nervous about representing a person who is lost, but it’s really an honor to be able to celebrate and represent these wonderful people.’
