We faculty members in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications were all quoted by name in the articles reported and written by Kathleen Ronayne and Rebecca Strum of The Daily Orange concerning the chilly climate for open and free discussion on campus. Given that some of our colleagues on the Syracuse University faculty and administrative staff called their work into question, we want to state that we were accurately quoted and their stories match up well with our own views of this campus-wide problem. They did a splendid job. Further, if more of our colleagues had the courage to speak openly and on the record, dialogue on this campus would be greatly improved. Perhaps the fact that they fear to do so makes clear the accuracy of The D.O.’s reporting.
