Commencement 2012 : Colleges hold individual convocation ceremonies Saturday
Each school at Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry will hold individual convocation ceremonies to present its graduating students with their diplomas. Ceremonies will be held Saturday before the commencement ceremony Sunday.
The College of Arts and Sciences will celebrate the graduation of its seniors Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Carrier Dome, according to its website. Various receptions offering light snacks in tents on the Quad will follow the convocation. The ceremony for graduate students will take place at 2 p.m. in Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College.
Award-winning illustrator Shane Evans will address graduates of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at its convocation. Evans graduated from VPA in 1993 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the school’s department of art. Each graduate will receive one of Evans’ books to commemorate the event, according to an April 9 SU News release.
The David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics will feature class marshals Shelby Keys, a nutrition science and dietetics major, and Sarah Lee, a child and family studies major, as speakers during the ceremony, said Dean Diane Murphy. Murphy said she will also speak at the ceremony.
NASA Chief Scientist Waleed Abdalati, principal adviser to the NASA administrator on NASA science programs, strategic planning and the evaluation of related investments, will deliver the convocation address to graduating seniors at the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, said Susan Karlik, assistant to the associate dean. R.K. Anand, executive vice president and general manager of Juniper Networks’ Data Center Business Unit, will address the graduate students, she said.
Ray Wimer, an assistant professor of retail management in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, was selected by seniors to be their convocation speaker, said Clint Tankersley, associate dean of undergraduate programs.
The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs will hold its convocation at 3:30 p.m in Hendricks Chapel. A reception will take place in the Maxwell Hall foyer on the first floor of Maxwell Hall after the convocation, according to the commencement website.
For the first time, the School of Architecture’s convocation will be streamed live on the web. The convocation will take place at Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College at 10 a.m. A luncheon will be provided for students Friday, May 11 at noon in the Slocum Atrium, according to the website.
Phil Sanchez, principal of the Leadership and Public Service High School in New York City, will serve as the keynote speaker for School of Education graduates, said Douglas Biklen, dean of the School of Education.
The School of Information Studies’ convocation will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday in Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center, according to the iSchool’s website. Dean Elizabeth Liddy will lead the ceremony.
Danny Zuker, SU alumnus, Emmy Award-winning writer and co-executive producer of ABC’s ‘Modern Family,’ will address students at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at its convocation ceremony, according to a March 19 Newhouse press release. The ceremony will be held Saturday at noon in the Dome.
ESF’s convocation will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the John H. Mulroy Civic Center on South State Street, according to the ESF website. Receptions will be held Saturday at 10 a.m in varying locations, depending on the graduates’ majors.
