Stabbing victim identified as Syracuse running back

UPDATED: July 29, 2011, 4:10 p.m.

The 19-year-old victim of an early morning stabbing has been identified as a player on the Syracuse University football team.

Prince-Tyson Gulley, a running back, was stabbed multiple times early Friday morning when a fight broke out at a party on the 300 block of Slocum Drive on SU’s South Campus, said SPD spokesman Sgt. Gary Bulinski. Police responded to the incident at 1:25 a.m. Initial reports that the incident occurred on the 500 block of Slocum Drive were incorrect, Bulinski said.

SU Athletics released a statement from head coach Doug Marrone Friday afternoon after SPD confirmed Gulley was the victim.

‘We are aware of the incident in which Prince-Tyson Gulley was injured last night. He is recovering from the injuries and will be under the care of our medical staff. We will continue to work with the proper authorities as we handle the matter internally,’ Marrone said.

Gulley was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital by a Rural Metro ambulance. Another victim, a 24-year-old male, was also picked up on Slocum Drive and taken to Upstate University Hospital, said Rural Metro spokeswoman Melissa Fleischmann. She could not comment on the specifics of the injuries in either case, but SU and police officials have reported only one stabbing incident.

The investigation is ongoing. SU’s Department of Public Safety emailed students an alert regarding the incident Friday afternoon. The suspect, a black male of unknown age about 6-feet-tall, is not believed to be an SU student. He was last seen wearing a white V-neck shirt, shorts, a green baseball style hat and is described as having short hair in dreadlocks and a pierced bottom lip, according to the DPS email.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 442-5222.

Gulley, a sophomore from Akron, Ohio, played in 10 games for the Orange last season. He was the kick return man for Syracuse, and his average of 23.7 yards per return ranked fourth in the Big East. He finished with 633 return yards on 29 attempts.

Gulley also had 13 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown. His only collegiate touchdown came in SU’s 42-7 win over Colgate.
